If you have missing teeth, dental implants might be the solution you’re looking for. They have the look and feel of natural teeth—so people will only notice your healthy-looking, attractive smile.
What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a replacement tooth, from root to crown. An implant has three components—a root form, an abutment, and a crown.
Root form – The implant screw, usually made of titanium, mimics a tooth root and is surgically placed in your jawbone.
Abutment – A connector is an attachment to the top of the implant that supports a dental crown.
Dental crown – A dental crown is often called a “cap.” A crown is the portion of your tooth above your gumline. It fits on the abutment.
An implant can replace one tooth, or multiple implants can replace several teeth. They also can be used to support a dental bridge or stabilize dentures.Your dentures will look and feel more like your natural teeth as few as two implants support them. Learn more about the options on our implant overdentures page.
What Are the Advantages of Dental Implants?
The advantages of dental implants include stable tooth replacement, jawbone preservation, and preventing facial sagging.
Secure tooth replacement – Unlike a partial denture or a removable dental bridge, a dental implant is anchored in—and integrates with—your jawbone. Implants are permanent, natural looking, and feel and function like natural teeth.
Preserve jawbone – The body naturally begins to reabsorb the jawbone in spaces where teeth are missing. After about 20 years, a small amount of bone left can make it difficult for your denture to stay in place.
Prevent facial sagging – Without the support of your jawbone, your facial muscles will collapse and make you look older prematurely.Dental implants help prevent bone shrinkage and facial collapse because they stimulate the bone and promote growth. Read the details on our facial collapse.
What Is the Dental Implant Process?
The dental implants process includes these steps:
Surgery – Surgically place an artificial root form (or screw), typically made of titanium, in yourjawbone.
Healing – Allow the implant heal for several months while you wear a temporary dental crown. Over time, your jawbone will accept the implant, fuse to it, and heal. This process is called osseointegration.
Restoration – After the healing process, Dr. Sirin will secure a ceramic crown to the abutment. Only the crown will be visible above the gumline. It will look and function like a natural tooth.
Dr. Sirin is a Fellow of the International Dental Implant Association. His understanding of implantology will give you predictable results that last. If you are considering dental implants, he will explain the pros and cons of this treatment and determine if it is the right option for you.
